North Sails and Bluenose Yachts recently hosted a Shorthanded Racing Seminar. Over 130 people attended the event to learn from the impressive lineup of speakers, including Ken Read, Suzy Leech, Ellie Driver, and Glenn Walters.

Alchemist and Arkana completed the shorter Point Judith course (120nm) in the Doublehanded class, which took the fleet to the Buzzards Bay Light Tower, round a buoy off Montauk, back to the Buzzards Bay Light Tower, and then to the finish in Newport Harbor off the Ida Lewis Yacht Club.

Last year’s winners, Ken Read and Suzy Leech, returned to top Class 1 with another resounding victory in Alchemist, a Sun Fast 3300, beating a well-sailed J44 by almost 25 minutes on corrected time.

After watching the other classes start with clear blue skies, a fresh southwesterly wind and a ripping ebb tide, a violent thunderstorm ignited the AP and sucked the wind out of the area just prior to Alchemist’s scheduled start. After a 40-minute postponement, Alchemist started in torrential rain, large seas, and light winds.
